Phuket Fishing Grounds & Seasons
Phuket has numerous advantages over other destinations when it comes to big game fishing.
The fact that it has yet to come into the international spotlight as a gamefishing venue means that there are plenty of whoppers out there waiting to be caught and the waters of the Andaman Sea provide perfect conditions for many of the best gamefish in the world, such as marlins, queenfish and dolphin fish (dorados).
The best time for going after these prize fighters is during the southwest monsoon season (July to October) but people hook thrilling catches all year round.
Phuket also has a wide range of well populated fishing grounds, both close to the island (the Racha Islands) and farther afield (the Similans).
Similan Islands
The Islands consist of 9 limestone islands which are located 48 miles north west of Phuket's west coast. The islands are a designated Marine
National Park and fishing is banned within 3 miles of the shoreline. The ban provides game fish species with a superb "nursery" area. The fry and juveniles thrive in a protected
environment and ultimately provide anglers with great sport when they take to the open sea.
This destination is ranked as one of the top ten diving spots in the world, and also offers tremendous fishing for many of the species in the Andaman Sea. The Islands are home to: Black Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Narrow–
Barred Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda, Giant Trevally, Blue Finned Trevally, Dorado, Queen Fish, Cobia, Rainbow Runner, several species of Tuna and also various species of Shark.

Koh Lak fishing
Local fishing tours at Khao Lak consist of a longtail boat trip to the FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices). Local fisherman have constructed about six or seven FADs off the coast of Khao Lak (about a third of the way to the Similan islands). A large number of long bamboo canes have been stacked together in the water. They are essentially large floating bouys anchored to the seafloor.
The FADs attract the smaller fish and provide shelter. And the presence of the smaller fish will also attract the larger fish (such as Dorado, Wahoo, Giant Trevally, King Mackerel, Barracuda, Queen Fish, Sailfish, Cobia, and various tuna species).
At the FADs you can do fly fishing, Popper fishing, fishing with jigs, and spoon and wobbler, but the best method is with live bait.

From Pattaya, ocean fishing trips typically fish for sail fish, queen fish, barracuda, marlin, cobia, shark, and sting rays, among others. Freshwater fishing in Pattaya is also very good, and Thailand is considered a world hotspot for carp. Local lakes and fishing ponds are well stocked with this species, as well as tilapia and catfish up to 30kgs. November is considered the best time of the year to go fishing in Pattaya.
